Boards in Action: Broomfield Historical Society

Who They Are

The Broomfield Historical Society, established in 1976, is a non-profit 501(c)3 whose purpose is to collect, preserve and promote Broomfield’s history through various projects and activities. The board is composed of community volunteers with an interest in local history who contribute various organizational skills and community involvement backgrounds. Some are life-long or decades-long residents who worked or raised families here and some are more recent community members. Each member serves a three-year term with the option of applying for a second term.

Activities include educational programs and lectures, collecting oral histories, digital and print publications, historic site tours and special occasion celebrations. The board provides supplemental support for the Broomfield Depot Museum through grants and program assistance. It also collaborates with other Broomfield non-profits and organizations on related projects of historical interest to the community.

What They’ve Been Doing

2020 – 2022

  • Launched a new website and Facebook page in order to improve communication with the Broomfield community.
  • Pivoted from in-person to virtual activities due to the COVID pandemic. The new initiative titled “Broomfield in the Time of COVID-19” became the focus. Local artifacts and photos related to the pandemic were collected and stories of the pandemic’s impact on local residents were recorded and some turned into podcasts. Some of these podcasts were used in a special program put on by the Dever Museum of Nature and Science.
  • Awarded Greenwood Foundation grants that allowed CCOB’s history staff to curate and properly archive the materials and oral histories from the pandemic project and the items collected by former City and County Information Officer Rosann Duran.
  • Created a quarterly online newsletter, The Broomcorn Express, to share information about history relevant to Broomfield.
  • Held the first Broomfield Historic Sites Tour (eight sites).

2023 – 2025

  • Conducted an oral history project titled, “The Story of Us.”
  • Produced several local history videos for use in school classrooms in partnership with the History and Museum Supervisor, funded by an ACS grant from the City and County of Broomfield.
  • Hosted members of the Southern Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes from Oklahoma and supported development of a continuing relationship with the Tribes.
  • Resumed in-person history talk programs.
  • Published two books: The Best of the Broomcorn Express and Broomfield Yesterday by Marrton Dormish.
  • Held second Broomfield Historic Sites Tour.
  • Continued to apply for and be awarded the Greenwood Grant for preservation materials.
  • Convened a group of other Broomfield non-profits and organizations to begin planning activities to commemorate the 2026 historic anniversaries.

2026

  • Moderated monthly Broomfield 2026! planning meetings.
  • Hosted a shared online calendar of 2026 activities, printed promotional materials and facilitated activities.
  • 2026 activities include:
    • A proclamation in support of Broomfield2026! from the Broomfield Council
    • Installation of history themed banners on Community Park Road
    • Monthly history talks (most were held at the Broomfield Grange)
    • History Trivia nights at area bars and taverns
    • Civic Conversations at the Broomfield Library
    • Two community fairs: Apple Cider Fest and Olde Time Holiday
    • An expanded historic sites tour (12 sites).
